AN ODE TO A HISTORIC NYC CARRIAGE HOUSE
I often find myself captivated by the stories that spaces whisper to those who listen. When I first stepped into the historic carriage house at 45 Downing Street, I felt the weight of its history—a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of the 19th century. The intricate stained glass windows, ornate fixtures, and sculptures stood as silent witnesses to an era long past. Yet, the looming threat of modernization had cast a shadow over these treasures. Approximately 50 years ago, many of the neighborhood's 19th-century structures were demolished or altered to make way for modern high-rise buildings. In response, 45 Downing was designated a protected facade by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, preserving its architectural integrity and the invaluable art it housed.
Determined to honor this legacy, I embarked on planning a styled shoot that would encapsulate the essence of the carriage house's storied past. My vision was to weave together elements that paid homage to its history while introducing a contemporary flair. I began by consulting with the owner, whose passion for preserving the space was evident. Their insights into the building's history and the art it sheltered were invaluable, guiding me in selecting design elements that would resonate with the carriage house's spirit.
The color palette became the first canvas upon which I painted my homage. Drawing inspiration from the rich hues of the stained glass and the warm tones of the wooden beams, I chose deep burgundies, muted golds, and soft ivories. These colors not only reflected the opulence of the 19th century but also provided a timeless backdrop for the shoot.
Incorporating sculptural and textural elements was essential to evoke the artistry of the era. I sourced vintage furniture with intricate carvings and ornate details, each piece telling its own story. The textiles were carefully selected to add depth and tactile interest—velvets, silks, and brocades that mirrored the luxurious fabrics once favored in the carriage house. To further enhance the ambiance, I arranged for antique sculptures and decorative pieces to be placed strategically, their presence adding a sense of history and grandeur to the setting.
The lighting played a pivotal role in bringing the scene to life. I opted for soft, ambient lighting that highlighted the architectural features of the carriage house—the arches, the exposed brick, and the ornate fixtures. The interplay of light and shadow accentuated the textures and colors, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that felt both nostalgic and fresh.
As the day of the shoot approached, I felt a profound connection to the space. Each element I had chosen seemed to come alive, resonating with the carriage house's rich history. The shoot unfolded seamlessly, capturing the essence of a bygone era while celebrating the enduring beauty of the space. Through this endeavor, I not only honored the legacy of 45 Downing Street but also paid tribute to the artisans and visionaries who, decades ago, fought to preserve its soul amidst the encroaching tide of modernity.
